The NextGen Initiative is a mentor program designated for African American males in 5th-12th grade. The NextGen Initiative provides these young men with opportunities that will develop, mold, and enhance the skills needed to become the “Nextgen” of leaders, scholars, and innovators in their respective communities.

Funding is needed to help us provide resources and opportunities for the individuals in the group, such as food for our regularly scheduled meetings (twice per month), and educational field trips to expose the individuals to opportunities beyond their current environment.

Field trips include, but are not limited to college tours in state and out of Southern Union’s Ready to Work Program, Historical museums such as the EJI Museum in Montgomery, and many more.

Opelika will, in return, gain young individuals with a specific direction in life which helps reduce recidivism. Young individuals will have opportunities of on-site job shadowing which will help them land job opportunities. They will learn how to be the next generation of leaders and/or productive citizens of Opelika. Ultimately, through this mentoring initiative, Opelika will have more individuals who are steered away from crime and into the world of productivity.
